Our MD, Anthony Norton, sat down with Jon Patricios, Professor of Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, founder of Sports Concussion South Africa, and co-lead author of the 2023 International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport, who, together with Advocate Nick Ferreira SC, a constitutional, administrative and public law expert, will be discussing some leading issues in sport today, including: • What are some of the ethical dilemmas that clinicians face when managing the professional sports person? • Do the rules and regulations in relation to the drug testing of athletes give rise to legal difficulties and how is testing carried out from a practical point of view? • Exploring a case brought against World Rugby by more than 1000 former rugby players, for head injuries sustained as a consequence of playing rugby; and • Is inconsistent application of the laws negatively affecting the manner in which rugby matches are refereed and the way in which disciplinary sanctions are applied after the event? From the touchlines of schoolboy sport to provincial and international teams, these issues affect all players, parents, coaches and anyone else involved in the world of sport.
